1. SHALL
- Dùng trong thì Tương lai (Simple Future) ở ngôi thứ nhất.
- I shall do what I like.
(Tôi sẽ làm những gì mà tôi thích) - Shall we come to your house?
(Tụi anh tới nhà em nhé?)
- Diễn tả một lời đề nghị, lời mời, một lời khuyên
- Shall we go to the mall this afternoon?
(Chúng hãy đi đến trung tâm mua sắm chiều nay đi) - What shall I do with this test?
(Tớ nên làm sao với bài kiểm tra này đây?)
- Dùng trong câu điều kiện loại 1
- If you work hard, you shall have day off tomorrow.
(Nếu bạn chăm chỉ làm việc, bạn sẽ được nghỉ ngày mai)
- Dùng để diễn tả câu ra lệnh, châm ngôn, và tuyên bố về nghĩa vụ
- They shall be punished for what they did.
(Chúng nên bị phạt vì những gì chúng gây ra) - Students shall not cheat throughout the exam.
(Học sinh không nên gian lận trong suốt buổi thi)
2. WILL vs SHALL
- Will được dùng cho tất cả các ngôi, còn Shall chỉ được dùng cho ngôi thứ nhất (I và we).
- Will được dùng nhiều hơn shall nhưng shall lại trang trọng hơn will.
- Shall thường được dùng khi nói về các quy tắc và luật lệ. Trong trường hợp này, người ta thường dùng động từ khiếm khuyết shall với chủ từ ngôi 3.
- Ví dụ: According to the rules, members shall not humiliate the reputation of the club.
(Theo nguyên tắc, các thành viên không được làm nhục danh tiếng của câu lạc bộ)
