Trong 1 số trường hợp, ta không sử dụng mạo từ trước danh từ mà bỏ trống → mạo từ rỗng.

- Các trường hợp sử dụng mạo từ rỗng trong tiếng anh:

- Trường hợp 1:

Các danh từ số nhiều (được dùng để đại diện cho nhóm, chủng loài) hoặc danh từ không đếm được

Ví dụ:  

• Cats don’t like cold weather.
  (Mèo không thích thời tiết lạnh)
• Music is good for your health.
  (Âm nhạc tốt cho sức khỏe)

- Trường hợp 2:

Trong câu cảm thán với cấu trúc what khi danh từ theo sau là danh từ không đếm được hoặc danh từ đếm được số nhiều.

• Ví dụ: What lovely music!
  (Nhạc nghe vui tai quá!)

- Trường hợp 3:

Tên người, tên nước (ngoại trừ các trường hợp trên), tên thành phố, đường phố, ngôn ngữ, sân bay, nhà ga, trường Đại học, tên các môn học, các ngày lễ ngày tháng, các bữa ăn, …→ tên  riêng

Ví dụ:

• Vietnam is a beautiful country.
  (Việt Nam là một đất nước xinh đẹp)
• New York, English, Incheon National Airport, dinner, breakfast, lunch …

- Trường hợp 4: Tên tạp chí

• Ví dụ: Cosmopolitan magazine, Instyle magazine

- Trường hợp 5: Các danh từ chỉ phương tiện giao thông.

• Ví dụ: By air, by foot, by train ….

- Trường hợp 6: Các môn thể thao, trò chơi .

• Ví dụ: play football, play tennis, play volleyball, chess …

- Trường hợp 7: Đối với các danh từ đã được bổ nghĩa bằng tính từ sở hữu.

• Ví dụ: My car is over their. (Xe của tôi ở kia kìa)

- Trường hợp 8: Danh từ + con số

• Ví dụ: room 3, page 37

- Trường hợp 9:  Những nơi mang tính chất thói quen, công việc hằng ngày

• Ví dụ: in bed, at home, at work, to school…

- Trường hợp 10: tên viết tắt của tổ chức hay công đoàn

• Ví dụ: WTO, NATO, UNESCO

- Mạo từ the được sử dụng trước các tên viết tắt này nếu chúng được phát âm 1 cách riêng biệt chứ không phải như 1 từ.

• Ví dụ: the EU, the US, the FBI

- Các trường hợp đặc biệt:

Đi với mạo từ "the"	Không đi với mạo từ "the"
Go to the church: đến nhà thờ (để làm gì đó )	Go to church: đi lễ ở nhà thờ
Go to the market: đi đến chợ (để làm gì đó chứ không phải đi chợ)	Go to market: đi chợ
Go to the school: đi đến trường (để làm gì đó)	Go to school: đi học
Go to the bed: bước đến giường (để lấy cái gì)	Go to bed: đi ngủ
Go to the prison: đến nhà tù ( để làm gì)	Go to prison: ở tù

Các từ luôn đi với the: cathedral (nhà thờ lớn), office (văn phòng), cinema (rạp chiếu phim), theater (rạp hát)

A Which is right?

1 Who is Doctor Johnson / the Doctor Johnson? (Doctor Johnson is correct)

2 I was ill. Doctor / The doctor told me to rest for a few days.

3 Doctor Thomas / The Doctor Thomas is an expert on heart disease.

4 I’m looking for Professor Brown / the Professor Brown. Do you know where she is?

5 In the United States, President / the President is elected for four years.

6 President Kennedy / The President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

B Some of these sentences are OK, but some need the (sometimes more than once).

Correct the sentences where necessary.
