1. Sự hòa hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ:

- Chủ ngữ và động từ trong câu phải được chia phù hợp với nhau ⇒ sự hòa hợp chủ vị tiếng anh. Tuy nhiên, trong 1 câu sẽ có trường hợp chủ ngữ bao gồm nhiều thành phần khác nhau. Vậy nên phải xác định được các thành phần này thì mới có thể chia động từ chính xác được.

- Quy tắc chung cho cách chia động từ:

Chủ ngữ số ít + động từ số ít

Chủ ngữ số nhiều + động từ số nhiều

2. Các trường hợp lưu ý:

a Danh từ chỉ số ít nhưng có dạng số nhiều:

 

Danh từ có dạng số nhiều nhưng mang nghĩa số ít như: news, billiards, physics, gymnastics, measles (bệnh sởi), mumps (bệnh quai bị), The Philippines, The Unites States

Đối với các câu có những danh từ này làm chủ ngữ, động từ sẽ được chia ở dạng số ít

Ví dụ:

• Physics is my favorite subject.
  (Vật lý là môn học mà tôi thích nhất)

• Measles is common to children.
  (Bệnh sởi rất thường gặp ở trẻ em)

• The United States lies in America.
  (Hoa Kỳ nằm ở Châu Mỹ)

 

b. Những danh từ tập hợp:

Các danh từ tập hợp chỉ nhóm người hay tổ chức như: class, group, crowd, team, company, jury, family, audience, band, crew, army, majority, public, committee, dozen

- Nếu là danh từ tập hợp chỉ một nhóm nói chung thì động từ theo sau đó phải chia số ít.

Ví dụ:

• My family has a big house.
  (Gia đình tôi có một ngôi nhà lớn)

• The football team has won the first prize.
  (Đội bóng đã thắng giải vô địch)

 

- Ngược lại, nếu danh từ tập hợp chỉ những cá thể riêng biệt thì động từ phải chia số nhiều.

Ví dụ:

• My family were good.
  (Các thành viên trong gia đình tôi đều khoẻ)

• The football team have just played excellently.
  (Các thành viên của đội bóng đã chơi rất xuất sắc)

c. Khoảng cách/ Đo lường/ Tiền bạc/ Thời gian: cần phải xác định xem đang nói về một số lượng của các chỉ số đo lường riêng lẻ hay một đơn vị tổng thể

+ Nếu nói về 1 đơn vị tổng thể thì dùng V (singular)

Ví dụ:

• Five years is a long time to wait. (tổng thời gian 5 năm)
  (Năm năm là 1 thời gian chờ đợi dai dẳng)

• Seven dollars is the cost of that cake. (tổng số tiền)
  ($7 là số tiền của chiếc bánh đó)

• The dollar is accepted in many countries around the world. (1 loại tiền tệ)
  (Đô là được chấp nhận ở rất nhiều nước trên thế giới)

 

+ Nếu nói về một số lượng của các chỉ số đo lường riêng lẻ thì dùng V (plural)

Ví dụ:

• Dollars are accepted in most Israeli stores. (rất nhiều tiền)
  (Đô la được chấp nhận ở hầu hết các cửa hàng Israeli)

• Two hours were spent cleaning the garage Saturday and Sunday. (thời gian 2 tiếng)
  (2 tiếng được dùng để lau dọn ga-ra vào thứ 7 và chủ nhật)

• Two thirds of the students are on the field trip today. (số lượng các cá nhân)
  (2/3 học sinh đi dã ngoại trong ngày hôm nay)
