Tính từ đuôi -ing và -ed là những tính từ miêu tả (boring - bored; interesting - interested), tuy nhiên chúng lại khác biệt về tính chất. Sự khác nhau giữa tính từ đuôi ing và ed:
a. Tính từ có đuôi –ing:
Diễn tả tính chất của một cái gì đó, hoặc vật/thứ gì đó khiến ai đó cảm thấy như thế nào. Thông thường chủ ngữ của tính từ đuôi -ing là vật nhưng đôi khi nó cũng có thể được dùng để nói đến tính cách của con người (làm cho ai đó cảm thấy như thế nào đó). Tính từ đuôi -ing thường mang nghĩa chủ động.
Ví dụ:
- My job is interesting. (Công việc của tôi rất thú vị)
- The film was fascinating. (Bộ phim thật tuyệt vời)
- You are so boring! Stop talking to me! (Cậu thật nhạt nhẽo! Đừng nói chuyện với tôi nữa)
b. Tính từ có đuôi –ed:
Diễn tả cảm xúc của một người, họ cảm thấy như thế nào về một cái gì đó. Chúng thường mang nghĩa bị động và đi cùng chủ ngữ chỉ người.
Ví dụ:
- I’m satisfied with my job. (Tôi hài lòng với công việc của tôi)
- Julia is interested in politics. (Julia rất có hứng thú với chính trị)
- I feel bored, I want to go home. (Tôi chán quá, tôi muốn về nhà)
c. Các trường hợp dùng tính từ đuôi -ing và -ed:
Someone “interested” (quan tâm) in something (or somebody) “interesting” (hấp dẫn, lí thú)
Ví dụ:
- Are you interested in buying a car? (Bạn có hứng thú muốn mua xe không?)
- Tom finds English interesting. (Tom thấy Tiếng Anh rất thú vị)
- Did you meet anyone interesting at the party? (Em có gặp ai thú vị ở bữa tiệc không?)
Someone “surprised” (ngạc nhiên) at something “surprising” (gây ngạc nhiên)
Ví dụ:
- Everyone was surprised that he passed the examination. (Mọi người ngạc nhiên khi anh ta vượt qua kỳ thi)
- It was quite surprising that he passed the examination. (Thật ngạc nhiên khi anh ta vượt qua được kỳ thi)
Someone “disappointed” (thất vọng) about something “disappointing” (làm thất vọng)
Ví dụ:
- I was disappointed with the film. (Tôi thấy thất vọng với bộ phim quá)
- The film was disappointing. (Bộ phim thật đáng thất vọng)
d. Những cặp tính từ khác tận cùng bằng –ing và –ed:
